Living in Israel

by Olga Tyomina

Middle East is an interesting place. When you come to live here, you live through many stages of accepting it. In the beginning you think – what a wild place, what a strange place – high technologies together with old buildings, weird clothes, strange traditions and unusual food.
Israel is a part of the Middle East, Israel is a developed country, with high level technologies, high level scientists and oriental food that is sold in small oriental shops but smiling oriental people.
There are about 7 million people who call themselves Israelis. The biggest part of these people came from different places, have their own stories.
If you want to survive in Israel without any problems you should speak at least one of the mostly spread here languages – English, Russian, Hebrew (State language) or Arabic.
If you speak English, you will be fine in any country of the world. But why Russian will you ask? In Israel about 3 million people can speak Russian or came to the country  from former Soviet Union territories, so at least they will understand you and show you the direction you are searching for. In Israel you can meet people who came to this place 5-7 years ago and still speak only one language – Russian. Their Hebrew consists of 5-10 words. “Shalom” (Hello, peace and good bye), “Toda” (thank you), “Cama ze ole?” (how much does it cost?), “Ken” (yes) and “Lo” (No).
But what is interesting - these people, who don’t know Hebrew, have no problems with their daily life – they go to Russian shops, Russian book stores, Russian speaking consultants in Bank and can get service in Russian wherever they want. If you ask – how did it happen – so many Russian speaking people – the answer is very easy – there were massive “Aliyas” immigrations from Russia before USSR and after USSR has collapsed. The main problem of Russians (let’s call them so) in Israel is – they still cannot get adopted in the country. They cannot get used to it’s oriental part. They still live in their post –soviet society and still they can ask you – so tell me, is it still so bad in the USSR? These people are still missing their homeland, their way of leaving, of communication. They still talk Russian to their children, even not noticing that half of the words they use are Hebrew words. They still think, that in Moscow bread costs 50 “kopeek” and they still celebrate the New Year in a real Russian manner – Vodka, Russian Salad, lot’s of food, plastic new year tree, and speeches of the  Russian president on the TV.  What he will say, what he will promise, what he will wish for the next year.
But what is good about these people – they brought lot’s of high level engineers, teachers, artists.  talented poets and writers, their children serve in the army, protecting their land as others do.
Israeli community includes many native English speakers – many of them are famous and represent their country on international level. Politicians, journalists, writers, businessmen. They are coming from America, Great Britain and South Africa. Many of them are religious or Orthodox religious. Some of them serve the Army with Zionist points of view and staying here for longer, they are studying History of the Middle East and go to American and British Campuses to teach the same they learned here.
Also in Israel you can meet people from all over the world – Iran, Iraq, India, Kazachstan, Turkmenistan, Spain, France, Germany, Latin America, Africa. In Israel. Different languages, backgrounds, habits. Everyone came here with their aims, their plans, their dreams. Each community makes its investments to the country. Shares experience, knowledge, traditions. That makes Israel as it is. Specific, interesting, non – understandable. But when this middle eastern country gets to your blood - you can never forget it. It will never let you go. You will always remember it. Remember Aksa Mosque and Western Wall of Jerusalem, Sea Port of Ashdod, Bachai Gardens of Haifa and night Lights of Tel-Aviv.
