The main aim of religion

by Olga Tyomina

What is the main aim of religion?  The main aim of religion I to Unite people, to teach them how to live their lives in the best way. How not to do mistakes. How not to hurt other people.
All religions have leaders – top leaders and smaller ones. Their functions are extremely important – to help people to find their way. Sometimes if a person loses himself he should have a possibility to ask for help, to ask someone for advice and support. If you are Christian – you can go to church, to pray there, to talk to a priest, to ask him what to do. If you are Jewish – you can go to a rabbi and he will tell you what was written in Talmud about your situation. If you are Muslim – you can go to a Mosque and talk to Imam.
Nowadays world loses its unity. People are forgetting that first of all they are human beings, that each human being was created in the same way – by G-d or came from monkey. Nowadays people forgot about it, but their nature is searching for a way to identify themselves, that’s why more and more secular people are coming to religion. Religion helps them no find their identity. This process becomes more and more dynamic. For example on the post Soviet Union territories after USSR collapsed and people lost their communist identity. As a result a huge gap appeared in people’s hearts, they started searching for supplements. Religion was able to fill in this gap.
In the same period lot’s of people from abroad started discovering these territories. Ukraine, Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova, Georgia, Latvia, Estonia and others. Many missioners arrived to these places, they started working there, attracting people’s attention. If we will take Ukraine for example – Ukrainian Orthodox Church was definitely not ready for such a competition. It was not introduced to marketing and ways of advertisement and attracting attention of it’s people. Also church in the USSR was not ready to get freedom, and didn’t know what to do with it. That’s why lot’s of Orthodox Christians changed and converted to other brunches of Christianity or even other religions.
Nowadays people have their freedoms, their rights, they are disappointed in politics, politicians cannot lead them now, cannot show them the way , that’s why people address to religion. They use their freedom to express their opinions and points of view.  That’s why religious identity gets stronger and more influential. That’s why when you meet new people among new information about them you are learning about their religious views. On the one hand when a person finds itself it is wonderful. It is really great when in your daily life you have positive, good directions, when you feel that you know what to do and how to act. But on the other hand we have a scary fact that politicians and top level political actors can use religion to influence people and to use them for their aims. That’s what is actually happening all around the world now. Nowadays people afraid of the same people but with different believes, having different traditions, dressing in a different way. Actually fear is the first step to hatred; hatred is the first step to a war. So, let’s better open Qura’n, Torah and Bible, sit together read and discuss it. Let’s try to understand our neighbors. There is nothing bad in Religion, but it should be connected with Freedom, Tolerance and ability to be open minded.
