Michael
Field was born in Wellington, New Zealand,
in 1953. Fellow at the John F Kennedy School of Government,
Harvard University, in 1986/87, and graduated in the
Wellington Polytechnic Journalism School in 1971.
From 1972 to 2004 he worked as a reporter, correspondent,
news editor, leader writer for lots of news agencies
like "Agence France-Presse", "The Dominion",
"Sunday News", "Evening Post"
and for "New Zeland Press Association".
From 1976 to 1980, he worked as a press secretary
for the Samoan Prime Minister's Department and as
media advisor for the Ministry of Agriculture of Botswana
from 1974 to 1975. Currently with Fairfax New Zealand's
Auckland bureau, writing for the group's publications.
First major assignment was to travel to Zimbabwe with
the New Zealand cricket team - and take in the political
and cultural disaster that is Robert Mugabe. He is
correspondent for Pacific magazine, Honolulu, and
for Island Business magazine, Suva. He contributed
Pacific articles for The Listener. Fortnightly Pacific
affairs commentator on Nine-to-Noon with National
Radio. Contributed voice reports and Q and As from
most major. Pacific news events for BBC, ABC, CNN
and others.
Author of Mau; New Zealand oppression in Samoa. Contributed
a chapter to What’s news: Reclaiming Journalism
in New Zealand, edited by Judy McGregor and Margie
Comrie (2002). Contributed a chapter, Clueless in
Coup Coup Land, to Silenced: International Journalists
Expose Media Censorship, edited by David Dadge, Prometheus
Press, New York published 2005. Co-authored Speight
of Violence: Inside Fiji ’s coup, published
by Reeds and Australian National University in May

Michael
